Joe Proulx, Elementary and Middle School Associate Dean of Boarding

Joe Proulx is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in French Studies and English Literature from the University of Waterloo, and joined KISJ in 2013.

I think everyone should read… Wayfinders by Wade Davis. He explores ancient Polynesian seafaring cultures, where sailors reliably navigated the South Pacific using swell patterns and stars. In an era of over-reliance on technology, it’s easy to overlook just what the human mind is capable of.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… surfing and bodyboarding, ultimate frisbee, soccer, and working out. Any additional spare time I have is usually spent reading and writing.

I’m inspired by… those who push themselves to get better every day, and those who never give up in pursuit of their goals.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… hiking, rock climbing, and trying new restaurants.

I’m inspired by… the idea that there is infinite beauty and light and truth in that which I will never know or experience, but that there is also beauty and light and truth in my own unique experience and path which, at times, only I will know.

Andrew is from Aurora, Ontario, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Queen’s University and a master’s degree in the Humanities from York University.  He spent the past year working as an English teacher on Jeju, where he fell in love with this small but wonderful Korean island.

I’m inspired by… Edgar Degas. In the 1870s, he produced approximately 1,500 works of ballet dancers; he painted the dancers practicing backstage, alluding to the beauty in long processes that create satisfying results. I am inspired by those who cherish not only the result but also the practice behind the scenes.

Rochelle Kwon was born in Seoul, but has lived in different countries since her teenage years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Master of Fine Arts in Media Arts from Yonsei University. Rochelle joined KISJ in 2014.

I think everyone should read… the Winnie-the-Pooh series by A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard. Books for children can make adults think about childhood and friendships, about what a true friend is or how they can be one.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… walking in the woods or by the ocean, as well as reading outside. I also like knitting while listening to music or watching TV shows.

I’m inspired by… nature. I feel fully awakened in natural environments; they comfort and relax me, and help me to develop new ideas to apply in current situations.

Will Trumper was born in New Jersey and has spent most of his adult life in St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Will joined KISJ in 2015.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… hiking and the outdoors. As this is my first real experience out of the United States, I’m also spending a lot of time exploring Korea and trying out the new cuisine.

Antoine Yoo, High School Boarding Advisor

Antoine Yoo is from Jeju, Korea. Following medical studies at Université Paris-Sud (Orsay), he joined KISJ in 2013.

I think everyone should read… The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… Aikido, a wonderful martial art and way to protect both yourself and your opponents with only your bare hands. It is based on Kenjutsu (a swordsmanship technique), so in training you learn how to use a sword and cane to save yourself. Aikido helps you to develop your body and your spirit; its main ideas are peace and love, making it the perfect martial art for the global citizen.

I’m inspired by… Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba’s philosophy; he wrote, “When you bow deeply to the universe, it bows back.”

Maggie Yu, Middle School Boarding Specialist

Maggie Jeongeun Yu was born and raised in Jeju, Korea. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and is currently undertaking courses in teenage counseling. Maggie joined KISJ in 2012.

One book everyone should read is… Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho. It was the first book of Coelho’s I ever read and I was very impressed; it says, “People never learn anything by being told, they have to find out for themselves,” and this is my motto working with students: I let them find knowledge through personal experience.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… walking or biking with good music, stopping at some points to enjoy the view. I’ve also started baking and practicing guitar again.

I’m inspired by… my friends and the people I’ve met at KISJ. Our teachers and staff have so many amazing experiences and ideas to share.
