Cynthia Martinez, Elementary School Associate Principal

Cynthia was born and raised in Kerrville, Texas, but lived in Glendale, Arizona for over 20 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Ottawa University, a master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Arizona State University, and a K–12 Principal Certificate. She is currently undertaking a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and Development at Grand Canyon University. Cynthia joined KISJ in 2015-16.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with my family and friends, traveling and making new memories. I love going to different beaches around the world to relax, snorkel and dive.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending my time outdoors. I love to hike, paddle board, and spending an afternoon at the beach.

Angela Campagna, ELL Grade 1

Angela Campagna is from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and has taught in Dubai, Ho Chi Minh City, and Busan. She holds a master’s degree in Education and ELL specialist qualification from Queen’s University, a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Ottawa, and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Windsor. Jessica Charvat is from Brighton, Colorado, but grew up in Burbank, California and has most recently worked in Thailand and Myanmar. She holds a master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from SUNY Buffalo State, and a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and teaching credential from California State University, Northridge. Outside of school, I most enjoy… scuba diving and yoga.

I’m inspired by… Jane Goodall and Lek Chailert: strong, compassionate women who spend their lives speaking for those who do not have a voice of their own.

Elaine Costeira is originally from Macapá, in northern Brazil, but most recently worked in Shanghai, China. She holds a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Southern Queensland, a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Lethbridge, and a bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages from the University of Lethbridge. Elaine joined KISJ in 2017–18.


I think everyone should read… Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. No matter what age you are, you can relate to that message.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… dancing, going for walks, and spending time with my family.

I’m inspired by… this Dr. Seuss quote from The Lorax: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Tessa Cushman, Junior Kindergarten

Tessa Cushman was raised in the Midwest and East Coast of America. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Development from Trevecca Nazarene University, and is currently finishing a master’s degree in International Educational Leadership. Tessa joined KISJ in 2015-16, after several years in Cairo, Egypt.

One book that I think everyone should read is… The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. There are so many life lessons to be learned from this book, and my favorite message is that love is sacrifice sometimes.

Outside of school… I most enjoy reading and spending time with my family, and I’m working on learning more about photography.

I’m inspired by… this quote from Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Patricia DeLuca is from Charleston, South Carolina, but has lived in Seoul, Canada, Japan, Kuwait, and Myanmar. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Intercultural Studies from Southeastern University and Master of Arts in Teaching in Elementary Education from Liberty University. Patricia joined KISJ in 2016-17.

I think everyone should read… a book I read recently: When Helping Hurts, by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert. It’s helped me redirect my prior ideas and actions about volunteering and giving to charities.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… watching my son grow and change, eating out, and exploring nature, near and far.

I’m inspired by… the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood.

Sean Doran, Grade 3

Sean Doran is from Vancouver and Halifax, Canada, but has spent the better part of the last decade in Korea. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Saint Mary’s University, and a Master of Education in International Teaching from Framingham University. Sean joined KISJ in 2015-16.

I think everyone should read… anything that helps you understand the past and how humans came to be the way we are now. I’m particularly interested in 19th-century Russia and ancient cultures from Europe and the Middle East.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… sports and all sorts of media: I listen to music any free moment I have, and enjoy discovering new shows, books, comics, or movies. I’ve played hockey my whole life, and have studied Kumdo since moving to Korea.

I’m inspired by… anything that is strange, unique, or different.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… playing sports like hockey, baseball, and golf; playing chess; and traveling.

I’m inspired by… nature, my friends and family, and anybody trying to make the world a better place.



Laris Goff, Grade 2

Laris Goff was fortunate to have grown up and experienced all that San Diego, California has to offer. He later spent 17 years living in Portland, Oregon with his wife Margaret, before moving to Shanghai, China. Laris holds a Master of Education from Portland State University, along with degrees in Economics and Marketing from Arizona State University. He joined KISJ in 2017–18.


I think everyone should read… The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with family and friends, exploring new cultures and environments, cycling, scuba diving, snowboarding… nature!

I'm inspired by… a warm smile, kindness, art, architecture, food, music, those that question, new experiences that inspire questioning, and my father’s embrace of nature and life.



Margaret Goff, Kindergarten

Margaret Goff is from Portland, Oregon, but most recently worked in Shanghai, China. She holds a master’s degree in Reading and Language Arts with a Specialist Credential and a Bachelor of Arts, both from Loyola Marymount University. Margaret joined KISJ in 2017–18.


I think everyone should read… A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever  by Marla Frazee. Marla is my cousin and one of my favorite children’s book author/illustrators; I enjoy all of her books!

Outside of school, I most enjoy… walking my pug dog Olive, bike riding and hiking with my husband Laris, snorkeling in warm tropical water, and reading books—especially children’s literature.

I'm inspired by… travel and seeing more of our amazing world. I love to submerge myself in new cultures, food, customs, and traditions.

Matthew Gratz is originally from Bradford, Ontario, and has also lived and taught in Myanmar, Kuwait, and Japan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Education from Nipissing University and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Guelph University. Matthew joined KISJ in 2016-17.

I think everyone should read… Wonder by R.J. Palacio and The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen because of what the characters overcome in their own adventures! I also enjoy The Snowy Day by Ezra J. Keats because I can relate to the excitement of exploring something new!

Outside of school, I most enjoy… exploring new places, cooking, camping and playing with my son.

Araceli Hampton is from Austin, Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas State University as well as an ELL/Bilingual Education degree from the University of Texas. Araceli has over 20 years experience in linguistics, and joined KISJ in 2016-17.

I’m inspired by… Nick Vujicic: “I am happy—why aren’t you?” Nick was born with no limbs and has inspired thousands of individuals to take a closer look at all the precious gifts of life.




Daniel Hallwood, Art

Daniel Hallwood was a Third Culture Kid growing up, and is now a Third Culture Adult. Half-American and half-British, he was born and raised in Kodaikanal, India; like his students, he attended international schools and graduated from the American International School Chennai in 2003. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Montserrat College of Art and Design, and a master’s degree from Buffalo University. Daniel joined KISJ in 2017–18.


I think everyone should read… The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… playing—doing anything adventurous and active with the people I care about the most, my family and friends.

I’m inspired by… the amazing accomplishments of the people around me. My family, friends, students and the cultures that I see everyday are a consistent reminder as to how special and precious life is and how fortunate I am to enjoy this journey with them.

Neyda Moulier is originally from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She grew up in Columbia, Maryland, and most recently worked in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She holds a master’s degree in School Counseling from Loyola University Maryland, and a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from the University of Maryland College Park. Neyda joined KISJ in 2017–18.

Jennifer Newcombe is originally from Noosa, Australia, but has spent most recent years in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. She holds a master’s degree in Education from the Australian Lutheran college, a bachelor’s degree in Teacher Librarianship from Monash University, and a diploma of teaching from Charles Sturt University. Jennifer joined KISJ in 2017–18.

Outside of the classroom, I most enjoy… exploring national parks and watching wildlife, communicating with our three grown-up children, and walking our dog.

Ryk Newcombe is from Noosa Heads, on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, but most recently worked in Malaysia. Alana Keith, Grade 4

Alana Keith is from Baltimore, Maryland. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary/Middle School Education and a master’s degree in Educational Administration.

I think everyone should read… Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Although it looks like a children’s book, the wisdom and sage advice the good doctor dispenses is certainly applicable to everyone. One of my favorite quotes from the book: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” Words to live by!

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with my husband, Bryan, and our daughters, Brielle and Malene—especially when we are outside in the sunshine! I also love to sing, play the piano, and practice yoga.

SeungNam Lee, Korean as a Foreign Language

Seungnam was born and raised in Seoul. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Education and has taught a variety of ages.  She most recently worked at the International School of Koje as a Korean teacher to elementary students from over 30 different countries. She is really excited to join KIS Jeju and to be on Jeju Island with her husband and two young boys. She is looking to start a new sport while living here, either golf or swimming. Outside of school, I most enjoy… camping, yoga, doing zentangle, sewing, gardening, dancing, and playing with my daughter.

Joshua Kurtis Perry, Elementary Substitute

Joshua “Kurt” Perry was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri.  He has been working with youths for 12 years via teaching, outdoor instruction, sleepaway camp, coaching, and afterschool programs.  He has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Missouri Southern State University.  He joined KIS in 2017.

Outside of school I most enjoy...Spending time hiking and being outside with friends, family, and my partner Ms.C.  Watching and talking American Football with anyone that is willing to watch and/or talk about it (Go Chiefs!!).  I also enjoy playing team sports, rock climbing, and weightlifting.


I’m inspired by...My Grandfather aka Papa.  He was a man of the highest character.  He did his best to instil patience, good judgment, and work ethic into our day to day lives.  A true mans man and a gentle soul.

Sara Roberts, Lower Elementary School Counselor

Sara Roberts is from Kings Mountain, North Carolina. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (K-6) from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and a master’s degree in Professional School Counseling (K–12) from Georgia State University. Sara joined KISJ in 2016-17.

I think everyone should read… Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… being outside, long talks with friends, reading books, and trying new foods.

I’m inspired by… general kindness and respect for others. I find inspiration in children’s books, play, honesty and laughter.


Eric Rosenthal, ELL Grade 4

Eric Rosenthal is from Kingston, New York, but most recently worked in China. He holds a master’s degree in Education from The College of New Jersey, and a bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, and Rhetoric from Binghamton University. Eric joined KISJ in 2017–18.

I think everyone should read… A Separate Peace by John Knowles and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with my family, running, hiking, reading, playing sports and traveling.

I’m inspired by… great stories, camping trips, my students and other teachers.



Scott Stewart, Aquatics Coordinator

Scott Stewart is originally from Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in Westminster, Maryland, and most recently taught in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He holds two bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Spanish from Mount Saint Mary’s University, as well as a teaching certification in Physical Education from the University of West Florida. He is a NOLS graduate, Wilderness First Responder, and Leave No Trace Master Educator. Scott joined KISJ in 2017–18.

I think everyone should read… Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer and Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… rock climbing and rappelling, backpacking, kayaking and teaching others to love, respect and protect our environment.

I’m inspired by… my twin brother and his son, travel with my wife,  nature,  wonder and fear.



Kyunghee (Ashley) Sung, Korean Language Teacher

KyungHee Sung(Ashley) was born and raised in Ulsan, Korea. She holds a Bachelor of Education in Korean Language and Literature from University of Ulsan. and she had been worked at a local broadcasting station as a weather caster. Kyunghee joined KISJ in 2017-18

I think everyone should read…Essays In Love(On love) by Alain de Botton.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… going to the beach and having leisure time, traveling in a strange country and love to cook for friends.

I’m inspired by… good films. In particular, I'm impressed with 'Things to come' Directed by Mia Hansen-Love.



Layne Todd, Elementary School Music

Layne Todd is from Greenville, Kentucky, but has most recently worked in Beijing, China. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Euphonium Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Layne joined KISJ in 2017–18.

I think everyone should read… How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, because social skills are important and can be learned, even if they don’t come naturally.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… traveling to new places and documenting it with my camera, listening to music and to podcasts, and watching Kentucky basketball.

I’m inspired by… bold, creative, ambitious friends and colleagues who wholeheartedly believe that what they’re doing is the most important thing in the world. Conversely, I’m also inspired by nature because it reminds me that those ambitions are only a small part of a much larger picture.

Daniel Wickner, Grade 3

Daniel Wickner is from Maryland. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University, a master’s degree in Computer in Science and Robotics from Keio University, and an Elementary Education Certification from The College of New Jersey. Daniel joined KISJ in 2013-14.

I think everyone should read… The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, as it taught me that language is a toy that even adults play with.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… playing soccer with my team Jejuventus, and exploring the beautiful views and delicious foods of Jeju.

I’m inspired by… my mother, whose lifelong journey across cultural boundaries motivated me to do the same.


Pyong-Mun Yun, Elementary Physical Education

Mun is from Wellington, New Zealand, but most recently worked at Shanghai American School, China. He holds a Diploma of Teaching in Primary Education from the Wellington College of Education, a Bachelor of Education majoring in PE and Music from Victoria University, and a Strength and Conditioning License from the International Sports Science Association. Mun joined KISJ in 2017–18.

I think everyone should read… Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, and Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

Outside of school, I most enjoy playing the guitar, piano, walking with my daughters, and eating Korean BBQ and Kimchi.

I'm most inspired by the students who give their best effort to improve their character, health, knowledge, and skill.
