Patrick M. Carroll, Middle School Principal


Patrick Carroll was born in Charleston, SC, USA but most recently worked in Shanghai, China. He holds a Masters in Educational Leadership from George Mason University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from American University, and a Bachelor's degree in Justice from American University. Patrick joined KISJ in 2019-2020. 


I think everyone should read "Mindsets" by Carol Dweck and "An Altar In The World" by Barbara Brown Taylor. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy spending time with my family, reading books, playing board games and watching American football. 


I'm inspired by every new day and the possibilities of tomorrow.




Douglas R. Barringer, Middle School Associate Principal


Douglas Barringer was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in the USA. Most recently, I worked for the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) as an Academic Vice Principal in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. I hold Master degrees in Educational Leadership (K-12) from Gardner Webb University and Human Resources Management, Troy State Montgomery. My Bachelor's degree is in Political Science/English from Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama. Douglas joined KISJ in 2019-20.

 

I think everyone should read "Running With the Horsemen" by Ferrol Sams and "It's Your Ship" by D. Michael Abrashoff.

 

Outside of school, I enjoy reading, music, sports, traveling and spending time with my family.

Julia Snider, Instructional Coach

Julia Snider is originally from Sydenham, Ontario, but has more recently taught in both Honduras and Kuwait. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from McGill University and a bachelor’s degree in Education from Queen’s University. Julia joined KISJ in 2017–18.


I think everyone should read… Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner, What is the What by Dave Eggers, and Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with our son, eating at great restaurants, doing yoga, and spending time outside.

I'm inspired by… people who strive to better themselves, people who choose happiness and to do good in the world, despite facing adversity.




Eric Kunik, MS Counselor 

Eric Kunik was born in Saginaw, Michigan but moved to Phoenix, Arizona after college and joined KISJ from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He holds a Masters of Arts in Education Counseling from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. Eric joined KISJ in 2016.


I think everyone should read… The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, and The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with my family, being outdoors, and keeping myself healthy.

I’m inspired by… my son, whose energy never runs out and keeps me young.




Neyda Moulier, MS Counselor 

Neyda Moulier is originally from Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She grew up in Columbia, Maryland, and most recently worked in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She holds a master’s degree in School Counseling from Loyola University Maryland, and a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from the University of Maryland College Park. Neyda joined KISJ in 2017–18. 


I think everyone should read… The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… the holistic practice of yoga, travel photography, exploring diverse cultures, and getting lost in nature.

I’m inspired by… all of the arts, love, compassion, nature, and adventure.




Gregory Watt, MS Librarian

Greg Watt is from Melbourne, Victoria in Australia, but most recently worked in Jiaxing, China. He holds Masters degrees in Library Science and Educational Technology from Charles Sturt University. Greg joined KISJ in 2019-2020. 


I think everyone should read The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. 


Outside of school I enjoy playing guitar and reading. 


I'm inspired by anybody that is able to speak more than one language.  



Whitney Little, MS Tech and Learning Coach/Digital Storytelling

Whitney Little is from Raleigh, North Carolina, but most recently worked in Sacramento, California. She holds a master’s degree in Liberal Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education from North Carolina State University. Whitney joined KISJ in 2017–18. 


I think everyone should read… Wonder by R.J. Palacio. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time outdoors, especially by the water. I also enjoy reading, trying new things, and spending time with friends.  

I'm inspired by… witnessing happiness and acts of love from others.


Tatiana Heckles, MS Learning Specialist

Tatiana Heckles is from equal parts Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Livingston, Montana and an Intervention Specialists for the public schools in both states. She had a Bachelors of Science in Education and a Degree in Special Education, both from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. International teaching took her to Venezuela and Shenzhen, China. She joined the KISJ team in 2018 with her chemist husband, Joe Catron. 


She thinks everyone should read. Period. She is currently reading The Worst Hard Times, The Untold Story of the Great American Dustbowl, but will be on to something new next week. There is so much to learn. 


She is inspired by students, young and old.




Paul Boland, G7 English / Social Studies

Paul Boland is from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, but most recently worked in Geoje, South Korea. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History and a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is currently undertaking a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Paul joined KISJ in 2017–18. 


I think everyone should read… Long walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela and The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy… ice hockey, golf, and camping with my family and friends.

Alisha Brizicky, G6 English / ELL 

Alisha Brizicky is from Nashua, New Hampshire, but has worked in New York and Beijing. She holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science and a bachelor’s degree in English from St. John’s University. Alisha joined KISJ in 2017–18.

Tania Campbell G8 English / ELL 

Tania Campbell is from New Zealand and most recently worked in Seoul. She has a master’s degree in anthropology and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and English from the University of Otago. She also holds a graduate diploma in teaching from the New Zealand Graduate School of Education and a CELTA certificate from Cambridge English.

Michael Keogh, G7 English / ELL 

Michael Keogh is from Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston College and a master’s degree in TESOL from The College of New Jersey. Michael joined KISJ in 2014.

I think everyone should read… Our Twisted Hero (우리들의 일그러진 영웅) by Yi Munyol.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… reading, swimming, and motorcycling (rarely simultaneously).

I’m inspired by… Thorton Wilder’s play, Our Town: “The morning star always get wonderful bright the minute before it has to go, - doesn’t it?”



Bill Rago, G6 English / ELL

Bill Rago is from Bristol, Pennsylvania. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Development from Temple University, and an M.S.Ed. in TESOL from the University of Pennsylvania. Bill joined KISJ in 2016.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with my family outdoors, playing sports, playing music, and fishing.

Luke Zaya, G8 English

Luke Zaya is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Most recently, he worked in Kuwait. Luke holds a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University, and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Concordia University. Luke joined KISJ in 2017–18.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… traveling, running, playing basketball, and being with my family.

I'm inspired by… my students, my colleagues, and my wife; but most of all, by our (almost) one year-old son!




Neil Barnum, G8 English / Social Studies

Neil Barnum is from Central Iowa. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Northern Iowa, and a teaching certification in Social Sciences. Neil joined KISJ in 2015.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… hiking, fishing, tabletop computer gaming, and playing sports.

I’m inspired by… breathtaking vistas.



Arthur Scibal, G7 English / G8 Social Studies

Arthur Scibal is from Lititz, Pennsylvania, but most recently worked at Brent International School in Manila, Philippines. He is pursuing a second master's degree in Educational Leadership. He holds a master's degree from Framingham State College in International Education and a bachelor's degree in German and Economics from Mary Washington College. Arthur will join KISJ for the 2018-19 school year. 

I think everyone should read "Transitions" by William Bridges. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy hiking, skiing and exploring new places with my wife and two small kids. 

I'm inspired by the caring nature of others. 



Nicole Kipfer, G7 English / Social Studies

Nicole is from Aurora, ON, Canada, and has been working in Jeju, South Korea for the past year. She holds a master's degree in Teaching from the University of Toronto, and an honors bachelor's degree in Sociology and English Literature from the University of Western Ontario. She also holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Sociology from the University of Otago. Nicole joined KISJ in 2018.


I think everyone should read "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy art, nature, and immersing myself in new environments and experiences. 


I am inspired by the strength, resiliency, and generosity of others. 




Anneice Jones, G7 English / ELL

Anneice Jones is from Omaha, Nebraska in the United States, but most recently from Dallas, Texas in the United States. She holds a master's degree in Special Education from The University of Nebraska- Kearney, and a bachelor's degree in Education and Human Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Anneice joined KISJ in 2019-2020. 


She thinks that everyone should read "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi. 


Outside of school, she most enjoys being with her family - both outdoors and inside the comforts of their home, interacting on social media, and journaling. 


She is inspired by her ancestors and her pursuit of balance. 



Tim Cushing, G6 Social Studies

Tim Cushing is from Maine in the USA. He began his Asia adventure in 2011 as one of the founding staff members of KISJ in the dorms. For the past two years he has been teaching language arts in Shanghai, and will rejoin KISJ in 2019-2020. He studied English literature at Wagner College in New York City for undergrad, and holds a Masters of Arts in Education from Goddard College in Vermont.


I think everyone should read Wizard of the Crow by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o or Visions of Cody by Jack Kerouac


Outside of school I most enjoy running, photography, creating music, the NBA, and cooking.

Natalie Bahen, G8 English / ELL

Natalie is from Toronto, Canada, but most recently worked in Saudi Arabia. She holds a master's degree in Education from State University of New York and a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Trent University. 


I think everyone should read "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park and "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy spending time at the beach, paddleboarding, running, baking bread and playing games with my husband and two young boys. 


I'm inspired by being in nature and reading books. 




Melanie MacCallum, G6 Science

Melanie MacCallum is from Nova Scotia, Canada, but most recently worked in Bangkok, Thailand. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Science from Acadia University and a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Science Education from the University of New Brunswick. Melanie joined KISJ in 2017–18. 


I think everyone should read… The Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, as it is a poignant account of an often untold history of Canadian First Settlers in World War I. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy… reading, trying new things, getting out in nature, and going on adventures with my biggest fan, Jon.

Lucas Oren, G7 Science / Math

Lucas Oren is from Edgerton, Wisconsin. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, 6–12 licenses for Science and ESL from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, and a Master of Science: Professional Education (MSPE) from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Lucas joined KISJ in 2013.

I think everyone should read… The BFG by Roald Dahl.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… cheering for the Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Green Bay Packers; playing basketball, riding mops, bicycling, traveling, and trying new/strange food.

Lindsey Sowell, G7 Math

Lindsey is from Lake Panasoffkee, Florida, but most recently worked in Bahrain. She holds a master’s degree in Education from Framingham State University and a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Florida State University. Lindsey joined KISJ in 2017–18.

I'm inspired by… knowledge and learning; there are just so many things in the world that I don’t know and can’t wait to see!



Jonathan Blake “Bo” Shaw, G8 Science 

Jonathan, Bo, Shaw was born in Gadsden, Alabama in the United States but most recently worked in Alabama teaching science and coaching robotics teams. Bo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in General Science Education from Auburn University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Auburn University Montgomery. He has sixteen years of science education experience in Alabama. In addition to teaching science, he has coached robotics teams for five years. Bo joined KISJ in 2018.


I think everyone should read...Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss.


Outside of school, I mostly enjoy...spending time with family, riding my motorcycle, DIY projects, and attempting to play tennis.


I am inspired by...my family and seeing students succeed.




Aaron Allooh, G6 Math

Aaron Allooh is from Akron, Ohio, but most recently worked in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education, with an emphasis in mathematics, from the University of Akron. Aaron will join KISJ in 2019-2020.


I think everyone should read…How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie.


Outside of school, I most enjoy… traveling, yoga, basketball, and running.


I’m inspired by… my grandmother, who overcame hurdles and became one of the first women to work for NASA. 




Christine Meunier, G8 Math

Christine Meunier is from Dale, Indiana, USA but most recently worked in Lahore, Pakistan. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Wittenberg University, along with minors in Environmental Science and Sociology. Christine joined KISJ in 2019-20. 


I think everyone should read 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy traveling to new places, reading, yoga and photography.

Adam Abbas, G7 Science and G8 Science / Math


Adam Abbas is from London, England, but most recently worked in Guangzhou, China. He holds a master's degree in Education from the University of Nottingham and a bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from the University of Sheffield. Adam joined KISJ in 2019. 


I think everyone should read the Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy martial arts like Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as hiking. 


I'm inspired by people who have achieved exceptional mental and physical feats. 




Benedict Dingle, Drama / Design Thinking: Lab Tech 

Benedict Dingle is from Woodstock, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Acting from Dalhousie University, and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto. Benedict joined KISJ in 2014.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… being near, on, or in the ocean.

Erik Nicholls, Band / Wind Ensemble

Erik Nicholls is from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, but most recently worked in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He holds a bachelor's degree in Music from Western University, and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Ottawa. Erik joined KISJ in 2019-20.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… Making and listening to music, reading, travelling, riding my motorcycle, playing board games and video games.


I’m inspired by... The sheer expanse of the universe and all of the possibilities within it.




Erin Yoo, Strings

Erin Yoo is from Seoul, Korea, but has experience teaching in Michigan public schools and an international school in Seoul. She holds a bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Erin joined KISJ in 2019.


I think everyone should read… "Dead Poets Society" by N.H.Kleinbaum. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy... listening to music while jogging.

Andrea Wilkins, Art

Andrea Wilkins is from Indianapolis, Indiana. She holds a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Art Education from Indiana University, and a bachelor’s degree in Art from Black Hills State University. Andrea joined KISJ in 2013.

I think everyone should read…. True Perception The Path of Dharma Art by Chogyam Trungpa.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… traveling, practicing yoga and dance, taking photos, listening to music, and spending time in nature.

I’m inspired by… moments of stillness, nature, relationships, and the complexities of everyday life.



Kara O'Connor, Spanish Teacher 


Kara O'Connor is a dual citizen from both the United States and Finland. Growing up, she lived in Alexandria, Virginia; Helsinki, Finland, and Vienna, Austria. She most recently worked at Brent International School in Manila, Philippines. She hold a master's degree in International Counseling from Lehigh University and a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Education from Mary Washington College. Kara will join the KISJ faculty in the school year 2018-2019. 


I think everyone should read "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy spending time with my husband and two children, running, hiking, traveling and reading.

Fei Gao, Chinese

Fei Gao is originally from Kunming, China, but most recently lived and worked in Hong Kong. She holds a master's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and a bachelor’s degree in The Teaching of Chinese Language to Foreigners from Huaqiao University. Fei joined KISJ in 2019-20.

Out of school, I most enjoy photography, traveling, reading and spending quality time with my husband.

Ashley Hayes, G6 Tech/Design Thinking


Ashley is from Niagara Falls, New York, but most recently worked in Shanghai, China. She holds a master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies in Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Nazareth College. Ashley joined KISJ in 2019-20.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… listening to podcasts, watching documentaries, reading, and creating.


I’m inspired by... creative courage and the curiosity-driven life.  




Laris Goff, G6 Tech Design Thinking / Create Space: Lab Tech


Laris Goff was fortunate to have grown up and experienced all that San Diego, California has to offer. He later spent 17 years living in Portland, Oregon with his wife Margaret, before moving to Shanghai, China. Laris holds a Master of Education from Portland State University, along with degrees in Economics and Marketing from Arizona State University. He joined KISJ in 2017–18. 


I think everyone should read… The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with family and friends, exploring new cultures and environments, cycling, scuba diving, snowboarding… nature!


I'm inspired by… a warm smile, kindness, art, architecture, food, music, those that question, new experiences that inspire questioning, and my father’s embrace of nature and life.



Kevin Kinahan, Physical Education

Kevin Kinahan is from Whitby, Ontario, Canada, but most recently worked in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He holds a bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. Kevin joined KISJ in 2018.

Outside of school, I most enjoy... playing sports, travelling, listening to Bruce Springsteen and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

I'm inspired by... my parents.




Catherine Abuja, Physical Education

Catherine Abuja is from Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. She holds a master's degree in Physical Education from The University of British Columbia, a bachelor's degree of Physical and Health Education (honours) and bachelor's degree of Education both from Laurentian University. Catherine joined KISJ in 2019.


I think everyone should read ... "Open Heart Open Mind" by Clara Hughes and "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed.


Outside of school, I most enjoy spending time outdoors, skiing, hiking, spending time with friends and family, and being active in general.


I'm inspired by positivity, challenges, and kindness. 




Drew Currie, Physical Education

Drew Currie is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, but most recently worked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He holds a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Physical Geography from the University of Calgary and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto. Drew joined KISJ in 2019-2020. 


I think everyone should read "The Inheritance Cycle" by Christopher Paolini, "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau, and "It's Not About The Bike" by Lance Armstrong. 


Outside of school, I most enjoy traveling and outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, stand up paddle boarding, and white water rafting/kayaking. 


I’m inspired by my family, resilience, and by the right song at the right time.



Timothy Yu, Physical Education

Timothy Yu is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  He graduated from York University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and Health Sciences and is currently pursuing his education degree.  Timothy joined KISJ in 2017.


I think everyone should read... The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.  It is a fantastic story of why the little things matter.


Outside of school I most enjoy... team sports, eating good food, watching movies and reading educational books.


I’m inspired by... my mother.  Her work ethic and warm compassion for others inspires me to be better everyday.




Jennifer Swinehart, Substitute Teacher

Jennifer Swinehart is from Racine, Wisconsin, but most recently spent 7 years in Hong Kong. She holds a bachelor's degree in both English and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and a teacher certification from Teach Now (Washington, D.C.). Jennifer joined KISJ in 2018-19.

I think everyone should read "The Color of Water" by James McBride and "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts.

Outside of school, I most enjoy cooking, traveling, reading, hitting the beach, and a good game of cribbage.

I'm inspired daily.... life abroad is full of surprises- some days are a win, others are not, but I find great joy in the adventure.




Kyunghoon Cha, Grade 7 and 8 Korean Social Studies

Kyunghoon Cha is from Jeju, Korea. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from Jeju National University, and joined KIS Jeju in 2017

I think everyone should read...Samgukji(Romance of the three kingdoms) by Kwanjung Na. Outside of school, I most enjoy...play with my family. I’m inspired by...books that give positive effect.
