Shawn Vento, Head of School

Shawn Vento is from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Health and Education from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with Educational Leadership from SUNY Buffalo State and a professional certification with Ontario College of Teachers . Shawn joined KISJ in 2015.


I think everyone should read… Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with family; camping, hiking, fishing and most of all, laughing!


I’m inspired by… the words of Helen Keller, “Character can not be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”



Dr. George Richard "Rick" Odum, Director of Teaching and Learning

Dr. Rick Odum is from Houston, Texas, but most recently worked as the Director of Advanced Academics at Hays Consolidated Independent School District in the suburbs of Austin, Texas. He holds a PhD in Education and an MA in Literature from Texas State University. He also holds a BA in History from Texas A&M University. Dr. Odum joined KISJ in 2018.

I think everyone should read The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences by Michel Foucault

Outside of School, I most enjoy hiking, watching movies and having adventures with my wife and kids.

I am inspired by acts of loving kindness in the face of oppressive indifference.



DK Hipkins, Director of Educational Technology

DK Hipkins is from Newport, Virginia, USA, but most recently worked in Santiago, Chile. He holds an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Regent University, a masters degree in Computers in Education from Shenandoah University, and a bachelor's degree in History from Shenandoah University. DK joined KISJ in 2019-20.

I think everyone should read..."Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Outside of school, I most enjoy...designing and printing 3D models, cooking, brewing, following baseball, and spending time with my family.

I'm inspired by...the miracle that is this amazing universe, a really good cup of coffee, those who do the right thing even when it's not popular, and especially my wife and kids who bring me immense joy.



Araceli Hampton, ELL Coordinator

Araceli Hampton is from Austin, Texas. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas State University as well as an ELL/Bilingual Education degree from the University of Texas. Araceli has over 20 years experience in linguistics, and joined KISJ in 2016-17.

I think everyone should read… The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… traveling, sewing, cooking, reading, camping, dancing, and going on hikes.

I’m inspired by… Nick Vujicic: “I am happy—why aren’t you?” Nick was born with no limbs and has inspired thousands of individuals to take a closer look at all the precious gifts of life.



Sarah Ko, Student Services Coordinator

Sarah was born in Connecticut, but spent most of her childhood in Illinois and Wisconsin. She has also lived in Virginia and Bolivia, but identifies mostly as a New Englander. She holds a master's degree in Prevention Science and Practice: Childhood Counseling from Harvard University, a master's degree in Early Childhood General and Special Education from Fordham University, and a bachelor's degree in English from Boston College. Sarah taught in New York and Boston for 6 years before joining KISJ in 2018-2019.


I think everyone should read poetry (in general) and "100 Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.


Outside of school, I most enjoy hosting dinner parties, exploring a city's restaurant scene, reading, and knitting.


I'm inspired by rich, genuine conversations.





Ty Riddick, Athletic Director

Ty Riddick is from Whitby, Ontario. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Bachelor of Education from Brock University and is currently pursuing a Masters degree with University of Alberta. Ty joined KISJ in 2016.


I think everyone should read… Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain or The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Dodige.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… hiking and being in nature, playing hockey or rugby and reading any historical fiction.

I’m inspired by… the resilience shown by individuals when faced with unique challenges such as Joe Simpson (Touching the Void), Team Hoyt and Derek Redmond.




Dana Sherwood, Aquatics Director

Dana Sherwood is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation and Aquatics, a bachelor’s degree in Education, a master’s degree in Special Education, and over 10 active certifications with the American Red Cross and other health and safety organizations. Dana is currently undertaking a doctorate in Educational Leadership, and joined KISJ in 2013.


I think everyone should read… Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… ocean swimming, biking, hiking, and art.

I’m inspired by… this quote from Jimmy Dean, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”



Scott Brown, Human Resources Coordinator

Scott Brown is from Seattle, Washington, but most recently worked in Madagascar and Taiwan. He holds master's degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction from the American College of Education, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Washington. Scott joined KISJ in 2018-2019. 

I think everyone should read "Cosmos" or "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan to better appreciate the wonders of the universe. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy playing tennis, basketball and exploring new places with my wife and two sons. 

I'm inspired by the creativity, resilience and hopefulness that is found in the minds of children.
