Shawn Vento, Head of School

Shawn Vento is from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Health and Education from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with Educational Leadership from SUNY Buffalo State and a professional certification with Ontario College of Teachers . Shawn joined KISJ in 2015.

 

I think everyone should read… Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… spending time with family; camping, hiking, fishing and most of all, laughing!

 

I’m inspired by… the words of Helen Keller, “Character can not be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

   

Cindy Toland, Director of Teaching and Learning

A native of Houston, Texas, Cindy has had a successful and varied 25-year career in education Cindy served most recently, prior to going into a consulting role, as the Executive Director of CASIE, the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Cindy has served as Head of School, Deputy Head, and Principal in five International schools in Asia, South America, Europe and the USA. 

 

Cindy and Grady have three adult children, two who live in Austin, Texas and one son who is a musician in Memphis, Tennessee. Grady is a teacher as well.  Cindy taught middle school and AP high school history and biology before becoming a school leader. Cindy holds a PhD in K-12 Educational Leadership with a specialization in Blended Learning and Student Achievement with Technology in ESL from The University of Mississippi. 

 

Outside of school I enjoy reading political intrigue, traveling, enjoying the outdoors, travel and spending time with my family. I am inspired by great leaders who bring  passion,trust and respect to their roles and who have the ability to bring people together and get them to work towards a common goal.  

 

I think Michelle Obama’s memoir “Becoming” is a must-read.

 

DK Hipkins, Director of Educational Technology

DK Hipkins is from Newport, Virginia, USA, but most recently worked in Santiago, Chile. He holds an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Regent University, a masters degree in Computers in Education from Shenandoah University, and a bachelor's degree in History from Shenandoah University. DK joined KISJ in 2019-20.

I think everyone should read..."Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Outside of school, I most enjoy...designing and printing 3D models, cooking, brewing, following baseball, and spending time with my family.

I'm inspired by...the miracle that is this amazing universe, a really good cup of coffee, those who do the right thing even when it's not popular, and especially my wife and kids who bring me immense joy.

 

Elizabeth Maltby, Dean of Boarding

 

Elizabeth Maltby is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, and joined KISJ in 2013.

I think everyone should read… Meeting Faith by Faith Adiele.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… biking around Jeju and seeing the ocean almost every day!

I’m inspired by… Goshka Macuga’s fantastically detailed giant tapestries.

 

Lauren Harvey, K-12 ELL Coordinator

Lauren Harvey is from Indianapolis, Indiana, but she most recently worked in Honolulu and Busan. Lauren holds a post-graduate certificate in school leadership, Master’s degree in Language Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Indiana University. Lauren will join KISJ in 2020-21. 

I think students should read The Power of Our Words: Teacher Language that Helps Children Learn by Paula Denton. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy spending time with my family and exploring new places and cultures. 

I’m inspired by compassion, gratitude, integrity, and those who strive for equity and inclusion.

 

Su Jin, Student Support Services Coordinator

Su Jin is from Fairfax, Virginia, but most recently worked in Tianjin, China. She holds a master's degree in Family Counseling from Texas Woman's University, and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Texas Woman's University. Su Jin joined KISJ in 2020-2021. 

I think everyone should read “Mother’s Reckoning” by Sue Klebold. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy cooking, hiking, and spending time with my son.

I'm inspired by people who feel enthusiastic about their life and family, and who share their enthusiasm and positive energy with others.

 

Drew Currie, Athletics Director
 

Drew Currie is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, but most recently worked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He holds a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Physical Geography from the University of Calgary and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto. Drew joined KISJ in 2019-2020. 

I think everyone should read "The Inheritance Cycle" by Christopher Paolini, "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau, and "It's Not About The Bike" by Lance Armstrong. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy traveling and outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, stand up paddle boarding, and white water rafting/kayaking. 

I’m inspired by my family, resilience, and by the right song at the right time.

 

Dana Sherwood, Aquatics Director

Dana Sherwood is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation and Aquatics, a bachelor’s degree in Education, a master’s degree in Special Education, and over 10 active certifications with the American Red Cross and other health and safety organizations. Dana is currently undertaking a doctorate in Educational Leadership, and joined KISJ in 2013.

 

I think everyone should read… Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

Outside of school, I most enjoy… ocean swimming, biking, hiking, and art.

I’m inspired by… this quote from Jimmy Dean, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

 

Scott Brown, Director of Human Resources

Scott Brown is from Seattle, Washington, but most recently worked in Madagascar and Taiwan. He holds master's degrees in Educational Leadership and Curriculum and Instruction from the American College of Education, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Washington. Scott joined KISJ in 2018-2019. 

I think everyone should read "Cosmos" or "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan to better appreciate the wonders of the universe. 

Outside of school, I most enjoy playing tennis, basketball and exploring new places with my wife and two sons. 

I'm inspired by the creativity, resilience and hopefulness that is found in the minds of children.
